Alangkarn Thai Cultural Show in Pattaya is my picture of the day and also my most favourite picture during my Medical Tourism Contest visit to Bangkok and Pattaya. Why? Simply because I had never seen such an amazing show with so much colours, culture and energy in a stage performance. What blew me away was taht towards the end, there were elephants brought on stage to showcase a traditional war between two groups and the sight was spectacular! If you are ever visiting Pattaya for general tourism or Medical Tourism, I would recommend you see this amazing Thai Alangkarn Show.

Here is the official website for Thai Alangkarn in Pattaya.

Without this experience, I would not have know about the many Medical Procedures which are available in Thailand. Not to mention all the amazing places which I was brought to see and experience. This also has opened up my eyes towards Medical Tourism and it’s modern capabilities in medical science.

You can also view my medical blog postings for some of the unique places around Pattaya that I visited during this trip. Last but not least, I hope you have enjoyed my articles and pictures in this special blog and I hope that I did not let anyone down here. Please leave a comment if you like.

Food Loft & Bar in Pattaya is one of the latest trendy food court chains in Thailand. During my Medical Bl0g Contest trip, I visited this unique place which was located at the Central Festive Shopping Mall along the main Beach Street in Pattaya City. This mall is also the largest shopping mall by the beach in Thailand. On my visit here, I did not know what to expect as everyone was raving about this new concept so my expectations were quite high on this place.

On arriving at the Central Festive Mall, it was actually looking very nice from the outside. The mall design was very modern while the layout of the outdoor shops were well planned and stylish. Taking the outdoor weather-proof escalators up to the third floor and then into the mall, The FoodLoft was an indoor-outdoor premises. We walked in from the mall entrance where a special card was given to us to order food. Decorations were modern contemporary and stylish while ordering stations were laid out cleverly for patrons.

The outdoor area has a sea facing view and was about five to six floors high so you could see the sea and main street. Breeze blew freely and to get here, you needed to go through two sections of automatic sliding doors. A balcony overlooked the lower sections of the mall while it was not humid due to the free flowing breeze here.

After securing out table outside, I took a stroll inside the food area only to be mesmerized by the amazing selection of local and international food. One section housed the international dishes which were all freshly prepared daily. Actual dishes were presented covered in cling wrap so you had an idea of what you were going to eat. From stakes to pastas and shakes to cakes, almost all standard European and American dishes were available. On the local side, the lay out was somewhat made to look like traditional Thai stalls. Again, the dishes on display were the real thing and walking along the stalls, I simply wanted to try everything there as they looked so good. There was also Indian and Vegetarian food available.

Finally after walking aound for ten minutes, I settled for the Thai Style Grilled Chicken with Sticky Rice and Papaya Salad. The plate itself was about a foot and a half long. The trick here is to order and present your Foot Loft Card to them and they will swipe it. After that, they freshly prepare the food and send it to you. So in all, I waited about less than 10 minutes before the food was sent to me. One thing I want to highlight here is that the service was simply Five Stars! Never before have I eaten at a food court with such excellent service from the cooks right to the waiters.

MY buddy Robert had ordered the Thai Chicken Fried Rice which was wonderfully presented and came with deep fried chicken pieces and a rich spicy soup loaded with lots of spices and vegetables. Obviously we had to try each others dish and it was mouth watering.

Thai Fish Cakes at FoodLoft Pattaya

I has also ordered my favourite Thai dish which was the Thai Fish Cakes. I simply cannot resist when I see them being sold. The outcome? It was totally excellent! Full of flavor and well balanced. The dip was equally tasty and I have to admit that out of the six fish cakes served, I consumed four of them. Well, the trick was to hold back on the sticky rice.

The amazing Thai Dip Sauce

Chocolate Brownie at Food Loft and Bar

Finally after our heavy lunch, I had planned on having dessert as during my scout around the Food Loft, I saw a irresistible chocolate fudge brownie on display in one of the stalls. So, naturally even after I was stuffed, I went in again and ordered this. They served it within five minutes and it was nice and warm. The result? Amazingly great, one of the best brownies I have had to date. MY buddy could not eat anymore so I had this all to myself. You can only imagine how I felt after that.

Overall, if you are visiting Pattaya City, make sure you check out the Food Loft and Bar at Central Festive here. The place impresses with something different while offering you a myriad of food choices which are all prepared freshly. Staff here speak good English while the place is spotlessly clean. The inside section can hold up to a hundred patrons while the outdoor area sits 20-30 people comfortably.Value for money? Yes it is as it was decently priced. Think of cafe prices, they are about the same here. And do try the Thai Iced Coffee while sitting outdoor enjoying the sea breeze and watching life pass by.

Wat Maisamran in Ko Larn is the only temple on the island and this beautiful place of worship is not to be missed if you visit Pattaya. Built over a hundred years ago and having gone through a proper renovation, the temple now houses a number of interesting spiritual and remarkable statues throughout the area. Located in the middle section of the island, you can take a taxi from any of the drop off points or you can take a walk from the main jetty of the island enjoying the idyllic village life along the way. Here are some of the beautiful pictures I took while I visited this place in November 2010 on my MedBlog Trip to Pattaya Thailand.

Koh Larn is a day trip island just located out of Pattaya City and there are many ferries going and coming from the island. If you choose to stay there, a number of home-style budget resorts or chalets are available. Usually travelers would make a day trip to the island for some fun in the sun and get back by evening. Some of the places on the island provide stunning scenery while it is possible to explore the island by foot. There are a total of 8 beaches to choose from here while a number of restaurants cater to all walks of life. If you like these pictures, please do make a comment with your feedback. Taken at one of the restaurants – Kiss, Food, Drink during my Medical Tourism trip to Pattaya. This cozy little restaurant located in the town area serves some of the best local Thai food and doubles as a cafe which is open throughout the day. Our lunch meal here was incredibly tasty as we had ordered based on the recommendation of the chef. One thing for sure when I visit Thailand is to always try the Thai Fish Cakes and Deep Fried Thai Spring Rolls.

The Tiffany Show – What was it? I had never been to a performance like this before and was given the chance to do so during my Medical Blog trip to Pattaya in Thailand. I had earlier asked a friend in Kuala Lumpur who had visited Pattaya what was the one thing to do while there and the first thing he told me was to go watch the Tiffany Show. So here I was, right at the famous Tiffany Building which has been here for the last 36 years. I took a look around, everything seemed so normal while the manager came out to greet my team. He asked us if this was out first time and with a nod, he politely asked us to head on in. A crowd was building in the main lobby as hoards of what seemed to look like tourist were getting impatient to go in. We were led straight to the VIP area of the modern 1000 seat theater and the show began which left me speechless in the end. It was far by the most impressive transvestite cabaret show I had ever seen and from the performance, I would instantly recommend this show to anyone visiting Pattaya and I am not kidding. After the Tiffany Show, the transvestite girls gathered outside the mansion for a photo session with the audience and here are some of the beautiful pictures taken by me. You be the judge of the beauty in these picture of the Tiffany Girls below.

Overall, all these beautiful girls are actually men or transvestites who perform. They are a class of their own and are really very nice people as I spoke to some of them. They represent the Original Transvestite Cabaret Show otherwise known as Tiffany’s Show here in Pattaya and is one of the best shows I have seen in my life. Some of the performers are as tall as me while most of them are moderately tall. If you are ever in Pattaya, again I will say it – Go see the Tiffany Show Girls.

Siam Bayshore Hotel Pattaya was one of the official hotels that I stayed at during my Medical Blog Familiarization Trip in Nov 2010. Located at the far end of the Pattaya Walking Street, this unique 4-Star Hotel which has a huge area was my last hotel before heading back to Bangkok. For a fact, the hotel looks hidden from the naked eye but upon walking in, you are transported into another world here. Being one of the oldest hotels in Pattaya, the Siam Bayshore Hotel has undergone a massive make over giving the place a new life with elegantly designed interior and beautiful manicured landscaping throughout the hotel. Walking to my room made me feel totally relaxed as I felt the resort feeling here even though just outside the hotel walls, the bustling city of Pattaya was at full swing.

Beautiful fountain at Siam Bayshore

Lobby area of Siam Bayshore Hotel in Pattaya

Checking in to the hotel, a simple entrance greets you while the clean designed reception area is manned by locals who speak excellent English. Relatively fast and easy, welcome drinks and a cold towel was served and within minutes after filling the check in card, we were on our way to the rooms. Despite the long scenic walk to the rooms, I was easily attracted to the various plants and landscaping along the way as gardeners were seen attending to the floral needs. A number of exotic local orchids made me stop to admire the beauty displayed.

Reception area

Striking pillowcases stood out while room furniture was simple and neat. A large LCD TV took up a portion of the main table while a lounge chair sat comfortable in its place by a tea table complete with a platter of local fresh fruits. Everything was spot on as I took a look around the room and within minutes, the bell boy had rang the door bell with my luggage. A token of appreciation was given to the bell boy as he politely asked me if there was anything that I need to know about the room, we was ready to assist.

The bathroom was cleverly designed with a sliding section that parted the main room. Complete with a tub, you could simply lay in there and watch some movies via the sliding doors. I have to say that the bathroom here was well done to my expectations as it looked very sleek and modern even by using tiles and glass. The trick in here was the warm lights placed carefully to give the area a nice warm feel.

Dressing table at Siam Bayshore Hotel

Overall, after two days here, I have to say that this has been one of the better hotels I have stayed at in Pattaya in terms of functionality and service. Only setback, I did not have enough time to fully explore the place especially the pool and spa. The breakfast area was a very nice touch as it looked like sitting in a huge glass patio with views of the main Pattaya Walking Street. Selections of food was incredible as the choices were fresh and inviting. On my two days here, the breakfast restaurant was filled to the brim with international guests where finding a window seat at the patio area was almost impossible.

The 270 room resort has sea view rooms and 12 beautifully designed low-rise pavilions set amongst acres of manicured tropical gardens are available here. Kids have an area to play in the pool while most of Pattaya’s main attractions are just a stone’s throw away. Walking to the main shopping area is easy too. The seaside restaurant boasts of excellent food (which I tried and agree) with beautiful views of Pattaya bay and is best experienced during dinner. A Spa is also available for those who seek some pampering or simply to rest and relax. If you are undecided on which resort of hotel to stay while in Pattaya, I would easily recommend the Siam Bayshore Hotel and Resort as you cannot go wrong here. Everything is within reach or walking distance.

Kinnaree Thai Restaurant in Bangkok was selected as the official restaurant for the Med Blog Contest farewell dinner. This cozy and romantic little gem is also located in the heart of Bangkok in the Sukhumvit area but only to be away from the main streets. On my arrival here, I couldn’t help notice how it was cleverly disguised with a lot of trees and plants. A bright orange-red designed tuk tuk was the first thing that caught my eye. Thinking it was part of the decorations, I was eventually told by the staff that the restaurant did a taxi service for guest after dinner.

Apart from being greeted by the restaurant manager and staff, the entire group of us were also greeted by the representatives of the Medical Blog Contest as this was our final night in Bangkok. A special area in the restaurant was also reserved for us and the table layout was most impressive. I took a walk around the restaurant to further inspect only to be thrilled by the unique decorations and design used here. All of the staff here spoke either little or excellent English and this was one of my plus points of eating in a foreign restaurant. It’s no wonder many expatriates are seen dining at the Kinnaree Restaurant here in Bangkok.

Unique cocktail with extra long straws

Our drinks arrived first and it was a spectacular sight as the cocktails came with a super long straw. When I say long, it was about four feet in length! Definitely an ice breaker as everyone was talking about it while some were even taking pictures of it. I admit, I too was one of the photographers for this. Soon out first course arrived and me being excited about taking to everyone at the table, totally forgot to ask about the dishes. Nevertheless, they looked very impressive and tasty as most of us had been very hungry from the long day around Bangkok.

Local Thai Sauces

The dishes started to pour in one by one and somehow, they seemed to be getting bigger and longer. Plates and glasses had to be moved to make way for some of the local Thai dishes that looked totally out of this world. In a good way, I had never tried local Thai food at this level in all my years of eating. More importantly, some of the local sauces were indeed very interesting. Luckily for us, some of the local reps from the Med Blog were there to explain which dip went with which food. Such a challenge but yet exciting.

Golden Kinnaree Set

The starters that arrived were very impressive as the dish was garnished with a lotus flower and also called the Golden Kinnaree which was very mild in spiciness.. A combination of meat, seafood and vegetables were presented in different styles of Thai cooking. Overall, I am a huge fan of Thai Fishcakes and seeing one on my plate made me reach out and try it first. The outcome – It was simply amazing! Considering I just had some in the afternoon at a local street stall, this one was ten times better.

Selection of authentic Thai dishes

When the main courses came, this was the highlight of the night. Slim long platters holding four bowls of various meats in different types of cooking methods were laid down on the table. Called the Lotus Kinnaree, the dish comprised of Gung Ho Bai Toey (Marinated Prawns in Pandan Leaves), Ped Ma-Kham (Grilled marinated Duck Breast with sweet and sour tamarind sauce), Pla Thod Kra Thiem Prig Thai (Deep fried boneless fish with garlic and pepper sauce), Mussaman Lamb (Southern Thai Lamb Curry) and Phad Thai Kinnaree (Traditional Thai stir fried noodles). Side dishes of condiments and also bowls of rice were placed in front of us. With the massive overload of food, we had to rearrange the plates to suit each and every one of us. This was a wonderful experience as Thai food never looked so different as we dined here.

Interior of Kinnaree Restaurant

Finally after our two hour dinner, I would safely say that all of us were very satisfied with the overall experience, namely the authentic Thai food served. We had continued out chats in and out of the restaurant as most of us had barely known each other ever since arriving in Bangkok the week earlier. As I headed out, I also noticed a lovely gazebo styled bar in the garden with a stone path leading to it. Alcohol and cocktails were served here for the outdoor ambiance hidden between lots of plants. A final hug and goodbyes were exchanged as half of us were heading off in another van. To me, the Kinnaree Restaurant in Bangkok was indeed a very nice place to have our farewell dinner and if I ever head back to Bangkok in future, I will surely pay this place another visit.

The restaurant and bar also has a Wine Bar and Private Room with Balcony on the top floor which can cater to 60 persons. If you are looking for a lovely place to have a private function, you should consider this place in Bangkok.

Laser Teeth Whitening is one of the many interesting products that are widely available in Pattaya under Dental Tourism and there must be hundreds of dentist to choose from. On my recent trip to Pattaya in November 2010, I visited one of the well known Dentist in the industry who had a nice little clinic in town. Called Dental Point Clinic, this place offered all of the dental procedures you would be looking for and at a very reasonable price. As I was with my buddy on this trip, we were scheduled to perform a Laser Teeth Whitening process here.

Dental Point Clinic reception

On arrival at the dental clinic, we were greeted personally by Dr.Thayawadi and she politely asked us to call her Dr.Lynn to make it easier for us to remember. Speaking excellent English, I immediately asked her where she completed her dental studies and was surprised that it was all done in Thailand at the Mahidol University and she also holds a Degree in Dentistry from here. Remarkable English! As she and her team had prepared a mini presentation about her dental work, we were served a nice cold towel and drink in her main reception area. I liked the fact that they had a huge LCD monitor there and it was a dental educational presentation before each of our treatment. Asking about what dental treatments she offered, she kindly shared with us that her specialties in dentistry are;

Veneer (Porcelain and Composite)

Crown, Bridge or Cap

Removable Dentures

Diamond Fixing

Orthodontics

General Dentistry with Free Examination and Consultation

Dental Point Clinic Pattaya

While my buddy Robert was scheduled to go first, I had the opportunity to experience the entire process of his Laser Teeth Whitening (Cool Light Whitening) as a third party observer asking all sorts of questions along the way. I have to admit that the clinic on my first impression did not look like it had all this modern technology, but walking inside – I was clearly wrong. They were indeed up to date with international dental technology and equipment.

Preparing for Laser Teeth Whitening

Dr.Lynn then gave us a step by step introduction to what was going to happen during the Laser Teeth Whitening process and to make things easier, there was a LCD monitor in front of the patient’s chair with more information on screen. I can tell you that a dentist chair is a dentist chair – nothing special about it, but the over all ambiance made it more relaxing with some light music in the background while a trusting doctor was making you comfortable with her assurance in this process all the way.

Laser Teeth Whitening process

A pair of special infra red goggles was put on Robert for protection and the process started smoothly as scheduled. As Dr.Lynn’s assistant was up to notch on everything going on, we were informed that this Cool Light Whitening procedure would take around 30 minutes. The cool light whitening system has been specifically developed and tested to ensure that no harm is done to either enamel or dentine and that the pH level is neutral and will not produce any acidic effect associated with some other whitening products. Ok, that sounded very simple so the process started without any further delays.

Laser Teeth Whitening Process

Right before anything, they started to fit in a special gum and teeth holder which looked like a mouth piece made from rubber and that only exposed your teeth. Next, a gel like paste is applied to your teeth carefully by the doctor and then the Laser Whitening machine is brought in and placed just above your teeth. Each time the machine is placed above you mouth, it takes about 5 to 7 minutes and then more paste is applied. Done over a period of three times before the final process and then the mouth protector is removed while another special cream or paste is applied to the finishing process.

Cool Light Laser treatment

Laser Teeth Whitening process

Even though Dr.Lynn mentioned that there would be very little pain, it was totally up to the individual as one would never know how much of pain would be gauged here. Through her experience, children as young as 6 years old have done this and not an ounce of pain was felt. But for my friend Robert, little did we know he had sensitive teeth and gums so the pain in this process was a little more than expected but only to know it went away after a couple of hours with the application of a special gel to soothe the pain when it came.

Diamond fixtures for your teeth

Finally after the Laser Teeth Whitening or Cool Light Whitening process was over, Robert just wanted to relax and let the entire process take it’s course. Dr.Lynn advised him on using the special gel if the tingling effect came. Soon it was my turn and I wanted to opt for trying something different which was having a diamond stud fitted on to one of my teeth. The doctor asked me if I was sure as it would take about 15 minutes to do this. As I thought about it hardly, I then decided to do it only to find out that we had another important hospital appointment to go to in the city therefore I had to pass on this offer. I think I would have looked cool with a diamond stud on my teeth.

Anyway, for Robert’s outcome – His teeth were 70% whiter then when he first walked in. So it was a successful procedure with a little pain involved as this was simply due to the sensitive gum he had. Seriously, I kept asking him to smile at me to see the finished product. Now I wished I had done the same thing but time was not on my hands. Pricing was very reasonable compared to some of the medical facilities out there so if you are looking for Teeth Whitening in Pattaya or Thailand, always check for the best prices and also for the place and doctor.

Let’s Relax Spa in Pattaya was one of the places I visited on my arrival day during my Medical Tourism FAM Trip. The visit here was to introduce me to Wellness and Health Tourism that Thailand had to offer and the spa had arranged for a Hot Stone Massage which is one of their specialties here in Pattaya. The spa was originally established at Chiang Mai in 1998 and ever since has expanded to 6 day spas located throughout Thailand – Pattaya, Phuket and Bangkok where other outlets are. Follow the pictures below to see how my wellness and health tourism experience went here.

When I arrived at Let’s Relax Spa, I could not help but notice the beautiful structure of the building and how nicely decorated the entire place was. Greeting us at the entrance was the spa manager who sat us down and welcomed us with a nice cold drink and towel. Asking us to select our treatment oil for the Hot Stone Massage, I chose the most fragrant one which was the Lemongrass Oil. I took a look around the reception area to find it was tastefully done with rustic interior throughout while huge glass windows divided the main road from the spa. Once inside, you could hardly hear anything but the soft relaxing music.

I was then guided to my treatment room where I was to change for the hot stone massage. Looking at the room, it seemed a little bigger than the usual spa rooms I have been to. This one had an attached shower and asking my massage therapist, she informed me that I needed to take a shower before beginning the treatment. Oh well, it was indeed a hot day and I took a quick shower and then changed. As I have tried Hot Stone Massages in Malaysia before, I was really curious on how this was going to be and to my surprise, it was totally different and much nicer than back home. Something about the therapist movements that was different. Finally after a good hour of this session, I was done and proceeded back out.

The manager asked me how it was while one of the staff served me some Mango Sticky Rice and a warm glass of herbal tea. I was very honest with her is saying that this was indeed the best Hot Stone Massage I have ever had and from that day onward, I would set the benchmark of this kind of therapy on my experience here in Pattaya. With that, if you ever visit Pattaya or any of the places around Thailand, I would recommend you try out the Hot Stone Massage for something totally different. After writing this article, I am now thinking about getting a massage.
